NYMBO Update

Cropton Weekend- Saturday/Sunday 11th/12th July 2009

Mandy Faint and Andy Parsons had planned 2 excellent courses and put out the controls exactly where marked on the maps. However Mandy had lost her description sheet by the time she put #17 on derelict house when it should have been on the nearby fence post. Sorry. Thanks again to all of the helpers, especially the control collectors on Sunday who set off as the rain started. Thanks to Jens for another 2 excellent maps.

The big choice on Saturday was whether to go north or south and south seems to have been better as it gave better options later on. I wanted to ride the bridleway on Hartoft Rigg as I haven't been there before but discretion at #16 was rewarded with a better score by heading more directly for home.

On Sunday the overnight rain didn't seem to slow many people down but perhaps it stopped the fastest riders from clearing up. High scores though meant that everyone finished with a smile on their faces - if you could see through the mud. So the big decision was which controls to leave out. Andrew Windrum nearly got it perfectly right but with 6 minutes to spare he will probably wish that he had gone to 34,32,40 between 57 and 51. He still managed to beat Andy Conn and Nick Harmer both days so he got 100% and we all scored a few more points!!!

I really enjoyed both my rides although I missed the pleasure of the lovely bridleway past Elleron Lodge which was on my original route on Saturday. Spiers House was interesting although I am not sure that I would like to stay there in the middle of summer! Sunday was always going to be fast and furious but I hope most of you took the time to look up as you rode along the top of the crags near 38 and 43 so that you could appreciate the views down Newtondale and across to Levisham Moor.

All in all an excellent weekend with a pleasant barbeque for the few who stayed on Saturday night. The field at Mauley Cross made an excellent event centre but the low turnout will mean that the weekend will make a loss so I am not sure whether to hold any more 2 day events next year. Most riders seem to prefer just competing once each weekend so I am thinking of cutting the league to 9 events next year. Any ideas for improving numbers would be appreciated. If not, the prices are going to have to increase just to break even.

Congratulations to Andrew Windrum for winning both days ahead of Andy Conn (who won M40) and Nick Harmer who was riding for the last time before getting married in August. He will then be living in America so thanks for all your support for many years and good luck for the future. Nick is leading the league after 7 events but it looks like Andrew will overtake him next month as he has maximum points from his 4 rides!! Helen Smith and Jenny Sutton won W21 each day but Helen leads overall. Wayne Nicholson is leading M40 but faces stiff competition from Andy Conn and may have to settle for a minor place with Conrad!! Mandy Faint won W40 on Sunday with the 5th best score of the day (and is leading her class) so obviously her planning rides west of the Stape road had been beneficial. I managed to win on Saturday and Dave Evans got it right on Sunday but 2 excellent rides from John Rawden means that he is winning M50. Karen Clark was the only W50 so is naturally leading her class but is also the leading female rider so far this season. David Day and Karen Blackburn won both days to continue leading M60 and W60 respectively. Richard & James Martin had 2 excellent rides to lead the Generation class and Sam Wilson made up for a poor ride on Saturday with an excellent score on Sunday to lead the Youth class.
