NYMBO Update - September - Dalby Weekend
The weather was so good that nearly 100 riders turned up again for the MBO to take advantage of the superb trials that Dalby has to offer in perfect conditions. Wayne Nicholson had planned an excellent course with no obvious optimum route. The only slight problem was #19 which was 30m from the junction and difficult to find. So our apologies and please let me know if you haven't claimed the points. Thanks to the helpers again for making everything run smoothly.
Most of the top scores were by riders who went north around the Staindale valleys before heading down into Givendale then deciding which spurs to visit east of Low Dalby before heading back to High Rigg. Andy Conn won comfortably with Rik Thompson his nearest rival and Mandy Faint impressive in third place overall.
With only one event left most categories are already decided with only 4 to be decided at Masham as John Dixon explains:- Andrew Windrum is the M21 champion and Rik Thompson likely to finish 2nd. In W21, Jenny will have to do well to pip Helen Smith.
M40 is wide open.
Mandy has won W40 and Jill looks a safe second. M50 is very tight. If John Galway has a good ride he might leap frog everyone, but maybe Masham is a bit far west for him? David Day has won M60, Karen Clark has topped W50 and Karen Blackburn is obvious winner in W60 with a score only 2 points less than the younger rider. Dennis & Sheila have won Mixed Vets.
Zac might pip Sam in the Youth class - maybe with Jess or Jake up for 3rd.
Generation is all over and the champions are Richard & James Martin.
On Sunday we held the Third NYMBO Moors Marathon and 58 riders set off in even better weather. Although this isn't a race some of the times were impressive and everyone enjoyed their day out as the tracks were as dry as they have been all year. As it was a fundraiser for the Scarborough & Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team I must thank a number of people for waiving their fees - Forestry Commission for access, Richard Laley for parking, Jens Strain for the maps and the TCA for the day insurance. I will be able to send a cheque for £150 to SRMRT. Final thanks to the checkpoint marshals - John Dixon, Mike Nayler & Carol Donnelly, Jens & Eileen Strain and the Appleton family as well as Barbara for looking after the start and finish.
I intend to make this a regular fixture in the NYMBO calendar so you can put it in your diary - the third weekend in September at High Rigg Farm so book your plot on the campsite, come for the weekend and ride the Red Route on Friday evening as a bonus!!
I will leave the final words to Sammy Wilson who had an interesting weekend
Dalby Forest/Moors Marathon Weekend Report or "How Not To Do A NYMBO Event"
After a long summer break from trailquest I was looking forward to the ultimate forest event of the season in Dalby. Now even to the most naieve of NYMBO beginner's it is apparent that the courses are designed to be completeted on a bike, yet disappointingly, after my back tyre 'exploded' and bent the wheel rim, I was left without this advantage after a mere 20 minutes of the event. After running with the bike, I decided to hide it in a hedge, took a water bottle and the map and spent the rest of my time visiting controls as fats as possible on foot. I ran in with 50 seconds to spare and 215 points, although thoroughly disappointed at not being able to attempt what looked to be an excellent course riding. An early start on Sunday for the Moors Marathon, which followed a brilliant route through fantastic scenery with views of the moors, sea and MoD property. We made it past Glaisdale with no problems (apart from slighty soggy negotiations of the Grosmont fords) but past here things began to go wrong - quite literally, and very steeply - as an unforseeable and unexplainable naviagtional error saw us turn left instead of right and race 3 miles down a 33% gradient hill BACK to Egton Bridge. This cost an hour and, as well as a puncture, meant we came back ever so slightly later than anyone else. However the ride and the conditions couldn't have been better, and proved North Yorkshire's status as home to England's premier mountain biking scenery and terrain - we are lucky to have it!
